PHILADELPHIA–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The European Jewish Association (EJA), together with Joseph Lemkin — a relative of Raphael Lemkin, the Polish-Jewish lawyer who coined the term “genocide” — have called on Pennsylvania officials to investigate and halt the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention and Human Security’s unauthorized use of Mr. Lemkin’s name.

In a letter sent to Governor Josh Shapiro and the Pennsylvania Bureau of Corporations and Charitable Organizations, attorneys representing the EJA and Mr. Lemkin state that the Lemkin Institute has “no personal or other connection to Raphael Lemkin or the Lemkin family” yet continues to present itself as a legitimate heir to his legacy.

Raphael Lemkin, who coined the word “genocide” in the wake of the Holocaust, dedicated his life to ensuring such atrocities would never be repeated. He was nominated ten times for the Nobel Peace Prize and strongly believed in the establishment and protection of the State of Israel.

“The Lemkin Institute’s activities and positions are in direct opposition to Raphael Lemkin’s beliefs and life’s work,” said Alan C. Milstein, counsel for the European Jewish Association. “Their use of his name misleads the public and defames a man who fought tirelessly against antisemitism and for the survival of the Jewish people.”

The EJA and the Lemkin family cite numerous examples from the Institute which they interpret as anti-Israel advocacy, including statements accusing Israel of “genocide” following the October 7, 2023 Hamas terror attacks, defending Hamas and Hezbollah, and labeling the United States as “complicit in genocide.”

“These positions are not only factually wrong but fundamentally inconsistent with the values Raphael Lemkin championed,” added Jeffrey P. Resnick, co-counsel.

The legal team has urged the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to enforce its charitable law statutes, stop the Lemkin Institute from using the “Lemkin” name, and protect the public from further deception.
