BELOW IS THE EDITOR’S LETTER, published in the 6th magazine of The Readable.

Editor’s letter:

I spend my winters in Bali, Indonesia, a tradition I started in 2022—the year I founded The Readable. At the end of each year, I reward myself with time in this earthly paradise, where the spirit of love and kindness abounds. Running a news startup requires a diverse skill set that extends far beyond journalism, often leaving me drained. To recharge, I immerse myself in Bali’s stunning natural beauty, indulging in activities like scuba diving, watching sunsets over the ocean, and strolling through lush jungles.

I have been eagerly anticipating winter, especially after such a busy and productive year. In 2024, The Readable brought on three intern journalists and two freelance reporters, whose fresh perspectives enriched our coverage of cybersecurity news. From April to October, I traveled to Kuala Lumpur, San Francisco, Dublin, Leuven, Singapore, Las Vegas, and Singapore again, meeting with global leaders in journalism and cybersecurity. The insights I gained during these trips were shared not only with our readers but also with government officials and scholars who invited me to participate in their discussions.

Another focus for me this year was educating myself to become a better leader. To that end, I read works by Ben Horowitz, a series of Harvard Business Review articles, and writings by Kim Sung-geun, South Korea’s legendary baseball manager. The list grows even longer when including books on cybersecurity and mindfulness, with authors like David Sanger, Nicole Perlroth, Andy Greenberg, and David Hawkins. While I can’t yet say I am a great leader, I am confident that I will become one if I continue on this path.

Winter has finally arrived, and I am ready to head off to paradise. This year, The Readable achieved remarkable milestones, including attracting our highest-ever readership—thanks entirely to the quality of our news articles. None of this would have been possible without you, our readers. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude and hope you continue to enjoy the dedication and effort we pour into our magazine.
