South Korea has been selected to be the venue for an intergovernmental meeting on cybersecurity, which operates under the United Nation’s technology group, in the second half of this year.
The Ministry of Science and ICT said in a statement on March 4 that the meeting of Study Group 17 of the International Telecommunication Union’s telecommunication standardization sector (ITU-T SG17) will be held from August 29 to September 8 in the Korea International Exhibition Center.
ITU is a United Nation’s organization that develops technical standards for new technologies. The study group of ITU’s telecommunication standardization sector assembles experts from around the world to establish international guidelines that could provide benefits for manufacturers, as well as consumers.
Study Group 17 focuses on all fields of cybersecurity, including the security of smartphones, social networks, cloud computing, and data protection. The study group’s meetings are held twice a year and this year’s first conference was held in Geneva from February 21 to March 3. Youm Heung-youl, a professor from the department of information security engineering at Soonchunhyang University, has been the chairman of the study group since 2017.
The Ministry of Science and ICT added in detail that the security strategies which were suggested by South Korea regarding zero trust and the software supply chain will be one of the main topics discussed in the upcoming conference. Zero trust is a security concept that works under the assumption that no computer user or system is secure.
South Korea expects that this event will be a steppingstone for the country’s prominent cybersecurity technologies to take the lead in global markets, as it is the world’s foremost meeting related to the field.
“Security has become essential, and more and more companies have recognized the importance of international standardization,” said the chairman to The Readable. “We hope that this meeting will offer the cybersecurity industry a quantity of opportunities to strengthen international competitiveness.”
